Dare to be Stupid – “Weird Al” Yankovic – 1985

May 11th, 2012

Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic is having a great career, already spanning over three decades. In the early days he broke onto the scene with his parody of Michael Jackson’s hit Beat It, Eat It, some of the best 80s music there was. While most of his songs are parodies, like his version of Like a Virgin by Madonna, Like a Surgeon (it was Madonna herself who actually came up with the title and idea for the song), every once in awhile he would compose an original piece based on a band or artist’s style.

The video you are about to watch, from 1985, Dare to be Stupid, was based on Devo’s electronic, syncopated style. It was done so well that even Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo said it was brilliant. Better than what they had done. He jokingly said, “That’s why I hate him.” So put on your parody planter pots and prepare for some much-deserved fun!

Dexys Midnight Runners – Come On Eileen – 1982

February 6th, 2012

80s music included lots of fun, silly songs, and the one you are about to see and hear is one of the silliest, “Come On Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners, released in 1982.

Dexys Midnight Runners was formed in Great Britain in 1978 by Kevin Rowland (vocals, guitar, and Kevin “Al” Archer (also vocals and guitar) and later joined by a whole slew of talented musicians.

Their name refers to a drug, dextroamphetamine, that was used as a recreational drug and the high it gave, and energy to keep you dancing all night, was how Midnight Runners came about. Not only did “Come On Eileen” reach number one on the charts in England, but in the U.S. as well.

I hope you enjoy the following 80s classic. It’s a hoot and a holler!

Mötley Crüe – Dr. Feelgood – 1989

January 23rd, 2012

Rounding out the 80s music scene was a hard-driving, metal-tearing song by Mötley Crüe called Dr. Feelgood. And rightfully so. The video you are about to watch is from the Golden Age of MTV, when they played music videos and only music videos, all the time.

Many a hair band sprung up from the 80s, but few as memorable and enduring as Mötley Crüe. Mötley Crüe is a heavy-metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1980. The group was founded by bass player Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee, who were then joined by lead singer Vince Neil and lead guitarist Mick Mars.

Please enjoy this blast to the past – 1989!

80s Music - Trio - Da Da Da - 1982

Trio performing Da Da Da in Germany, 1982

One of the catchiest of 80s music hits was a song by a group formed in Germany in 1980, Trio.

The song was originally called “Da Da Da I Don’t Love You You Don’t Love Me Aha Aha Aha”, but was shortened to “Da Da Da” for obvious reasons.

When Da Da Da was released in 1982 it became a hit in thirty countries and sold over three million albums!

The video you are about to see is one of my favorite videos from the 80s music scene. You don’t often get to see many accordions on MTV, especially in a beer house!

I’ll bet many of you remember this song as the soundtrack to a popular automobile commercial.  You get an extra ten bonus points if you can tell which car was promoted in in this commercial.

I hope you enjoy this video as much as I have. I’ve watched it three times already and it just keeps getting better every time!

The Nails - 88 Lines About 44 Women - 1982

Back in the early 80s music scene there was a fun, new wave band known as The Nails, that formed in the mid 90s in Boulder, Colorado. They didn’t have great success, but they did have one fairly popular song to their name – 88 Lines About 44 Women.

88 Lines appeared on a couple of their albums, but made its debut on their 1982 release, Hotel for Women.

The following video is of The Nails performing 88 Lines About 44 Women in 1983 at The Bottom Line in New York City. It’s pretty rough, but live performances are hard to find. I hope you enjoy the sentiment of it.

The following video is also The Nails’ 88 Lines, but it’s the studio recording set to pictures of… 44 women! I hope you enjoy.

A-ha - Take on Me - 1985

One of the most-imaginative 80s music videos starred a pop group from Norway by the name of A-ha. In 1985 they unveiled a comic-book-sort-of meets reality video to showcase their instant hit Take On Me.

The video you about to see is not the official video, because embedding is not allowed by the official video poster, unfortunately.

Fortunately, the one you are about to see is the same as the official video except with Spanish subtitles, just in case you want to rock on down to one of your favorite 80s music videos en Espanol!

With members from both New Zealand and Australia, Crowded House made a huge impact on the 80s music scene, and are still celebrating much success today.

The video you are about to see is Don’t Dream it’s Over, from their debut album, Crowded House, released in December, 1986. The song instantly gained international popularity and went all the way to number two on the Billboard Hot 100!

I hope you enjoy one of my favorite 80s music hits, Don’t Dream it’s Over.

The Bangles – Walk Like an Egyptian – 1986

The Bangles - Walk Like an Egyptian - 1986

One of the things I loved most about 80s Music was how fun much of it was. Even if the topic was serious, the music could still be dancing fun!

The Bangles were one of the most popular all-girl bands of the 80s, and there were quite a few. With driving beats and fun melodies, they were a mainstay of the decade.

Walk Like An Egyptian, not to be confused with Steve Martin’s King Tut, was on The Bangles 1986 album of the same name. The video you are about to see is raw, driving, sexy and just plain fun! Please enjoy responsibly.

80s Music – Carlos Santana – Winning – 1981

80s Music - Carlos Santana - Zebop - 1981

Carlos Santana, who had already achieved great success over a decade earlier, broke into the 80s music scene with a, what I feel, was a much underrated 1981 album, Zebop. However, there was a track or two that caught on quickly – one of them being “Winning“.

Winning was always one of my favorite driving songs. A great way to cover three or four miles of highway, singing all the way. The video you are about to see is a bit grainy, but Santa and his band are tight as usual. I hope you enjoy this classic 80s moment.

Joe Jackson - An 80s Music Icon

There’s just something about Steppin’ Out by Joe Jackson that seems to personify the 80s for me. Maybe it’s the Cinderella quality of the poor, pretty hotel maid who finds a beautiful dress and imagines herself stepping out of her otherwise uneventful life, even if just for a moment.

Steppin’ Out was on Joe Jackson’s 1982 album of the same name. The video you are about to watch features Joe at the peak of his career. I hope you enjoy watching this classic 80s music video as much as I did!
